Pregnancy Issues
Recommendations for pregnancy should be determined in consultation with your cardiologist.
In cases where post-operative left ventricular dysfunction, ischemia, and/or mitral valve insufficiency remain significant, careful monitoring is necessary. The increase in blood volume that results from pregnancy can worsen left ventricular dysfunction and mitral valve insufficiency putting both the mother and baby at risk. Also, the isometric aspects of childbirth may be dangerous to the patient and the cardiologist may recommend childbirth through cesarean section.
Anyone with congenital heart disease, repaired or non-repaired, should consult with their cardiologist prior to becoming pregnant to review the risks. |
